All good "must-dos" guys...also need other experiences (float the Illinois is a goodun)--like:
Go to WoodyFest in Okemah
Take your picture in front of the Round Barn in Arcadia
Go to the livestock sale in Beaver
Road trip on the Talihina? (Talimina?--what's the name of the road where JFK visited?)
Scope out the Prairie Parthenon near Mocane
I need some stuff SE and SW--around Altus or Ft. Sill and Little Dixie Edited by ColonelTravis - 23 February 2010 at 11:20am |

We have a saying in my country - the coyote of the desert likes to eat the heart of the young and the blood drips down to his children for breakfast, lunch and dinner and only the ribs will be broken.

Incidentally--I'm working on a story right now called the Bucket List for Oklahoma...
any ideas? ie--what are the 50 things every Oklahoman should do before they "kick the bucket?"
For instance--
1. Watch the sun set over Black Mesa
2. Two step at Cains
3. Eat cheesy fries at Joes
............ Homer pick. OK--see game at Owen Field and visit Switzer Center
Play round of golf at Jimmie Austin (best public course in the state)
there's lots to do--may have to up it from 50 to 103 (years of statehood) sorry, jimmie austin is not as good as karsten creek. played both, kc is freaking awesome. just as good as oak tree national (before otn re-did everything) imo. kc costs too much to play now
jimmie austin also raised their rates![]() james a. should be poy, but collins will get lots of votes due to ku being so strong
-agree with talimina drive-awesome
- agree with meers burger, also get the banana pudding
-eat at Catfish Platter (outside of madill and kinston on hwy 99, 1 mile north of texas border) best catfish i have ever had. family run.
-fish any lake at sunrise or sunset. being out in the middle of the water at that time is awesome.

I'm an OSU guy and agree to a certain extent that Karsten is "better" than Jimmie Austin. However--at Karsten they could care less if anybody besides the players ever played it again. That's a training ground for the best D1 golf program. It's like Ou football practice fields--it's there for the scholarship players, the rest of us they could give diddly squat about. Jimmie Austin on the other hand hosted the USGA Publinx. It's a Perry Maxwell course (same as Southern Hills and Dornick) totally open to the public and a very good walker's course, welcoming, encouraging and inviting to general public, the type of course we need more of in America. It's also a great practice facility (range and shortgame areas) besides being near campus and home to Sooner golf teams. Honestly it's just one of my top 10 golf experiences anywhere and I've a played from coast to coast. As much as I enjoy Karsten, I would much rather play five rounds at JA for the price of one at Karsten. Karsten off the tips is a monster. JA from the back tees--a fair test for anyone who can drive it 250 (and keep it in play) with some iron game. Edited by ColonelTravis - 23 February 2010 at 1:02pm |

you really shouldn't compare the two courses. Austin is a public course, and is very nice. Karsten is beyond beautiful and beyond difficult. and as far as karsten not caring about people, other than the OSU golf teams, playing it? not true. there are memberships to be had, they are just limited. there is a bulls eye, w/ the middle being Karsten/Stillwater. the rings around the center represent an area (w/in miles) they only allow so many people memberships from each ring. don't know if that makes sense

Don't get me wrong--it's the greatest thing that ever happened to OSU. And yes memberships are availiable (outside the radius--Holder didn't want to destroy the membership at Stillwater Country Club). And the Boone cottages are available to members and guests when Boone's not using them. But the point I'm making is the fees are exorbitantly high not to pay for the course or maintenance (that's endowed) but basically to restrict play. Karsten exists for one purpose: proving ground for national champions and future tour professionals. The rest is secondary. That being said I can strongly recommend anybody to visit the pro shop or have lunch at the grill next time they're in Stillwater. That's all open to public--and one of best bacon charburgers on the planet. But if you're going to play--have to be guest of a member and ready to pay the full load--what are green fees now $200/ round? Edited by ColonelTravis - 23 February 2010 at 1:11pm |

I have been to Stillwater a million times, went to school there but have never stepped foot on Karsten. Sad but true...

Right across the main room is the hall with all the trophies and All Americans. Every Poke should own a Karsten cap or visor.

Really wasn't much of a battle, though. . .
And I see the censor won't let me spell Wash!ta the correct way.
