True, people did go to the show rooms. True, car manufacturers did cut their inventory. Unfortunately, the stream of customers tailed off after the program closed. The government had a horrid design for information flow and underestimated the number of people needed to process the claims. What did they do? The dealers have to front the money and wait far too long to get their money. You can nit pick all you want, CFC certainly had it's problems but it worked. It brought tight fisted consumers into car dealers and they spent money. Sorry Annie, it worked. It only took future sales and transferred them to the present, and inefficiently at that. There has been several studies to substantiate that. No stimulus is designed to stimulate the economy with the goal of long-term growth. This only took the potential for future growth and applied it to the present. And again, at a very inefficient and costly price. Some seem to fall for any gimmick that comes along. |

It was part of the 'unintended consequences' of a poorly thought through project. They failed to think of all those people who would be negatively impacted as well as the actual cost per car to support the plan.Originally posted by dockbumper5 It also put junk yards out of business. I have an 84 Bronco II, I get parts out of junkyards around OKC. Since CFC, I can't parts parts worth crap because all of the cars that would have been made use of were destroyed. So people like me, who pay cash for old cars and drive them instead of living beyond my means by driving cars that I have to finance for 5 years, were hurt drastically. Those of us that did not contribute at all to the problem, were hurt by those that did, so that they could continue to screw the economy up even more.Originally posted by Annie You can nit pick all you want, CFC certainly had it's problems but it worked. And yes, I still see junkyards in business also, but not as many as there used to be. |

I'm a district manager for a car manufacturer, and my personal feeling is that clunkers hurt more than it helped. 4 or 5 months of consistent sales months would have been better for my stores than 45 days of killer sales, followed by 4 months of very slow traffic.
of course this is just my personal opinion. One byproduct of Clunkers that is certainly bad for the consumer is that many "Buy here Pay here" types of vehicles were wiped off of the grid. This made the vehicles that were lower-end priced used cars at dealerships automatically increase in value (inflation at its finest). I have an SUV that has a trade in value $6k higher today than it did one year ago. it went from selling at Manheim auto auction for $12.9k to over $19.5k just last month. Dock, I agree that Tax Cuts stimulate the economy... but I don't feel that this administration defines them as a stand-alone "Stimulus Injection" for our economy. They may think that they are, but they'd never admit it because their platform won't allow them too. |

Perhaps, I should have stated that I've never seen a "Government Injection" type of stimulus work. I feel that Government Injection's are flawed by nature and cannot work for long. The other shoe always has to drop.

The symptom is the recession, and as you has fully demonstrated here with your “fiscal stimulus is designed to make consumers NOW…,” does nothing to address long term growth. If a program boosts short-term sales, but we’re back in the same malaise in the near future, then what was the point? |

Originally posted by boomerjake I said nothing about treating the cause, you did. Here is what I know about Keynes and some of his views. He believed the health of an economy will rise and fall. In the good times, govts should save money. In the bad times, govts should use fiscal stimulus with the money they saved during the good times........Tell me what you know about Keynes and his ideas on "treating the cause" as you put it???Originally posted by dockbumper5

Originally posted by boomerjake Fiscal stimulus in a recession has no long term goal. It is very much designed to make consumers spend money immediately.Originally posted by dockbumper5
Originally posted by Annie Stimulus is designed to make consumers NOW....Like you stated, it did just that.Tax payers subsidized those who opted to get cars at an exorbitant price. That’s the problem Keynesian economics. Treat the symptoms and not the cause. Please explain how this treats the cause? He cheated on his wife several times....at least once with another man.
And you have the gall to berate others that are fans of Tiger Woods GOLF GAME (not his personal exploits). You asked what I knew about Keynes and I told you. To use your words, "sorry you don't like the truth". It appears you like generalization/lumping with no proof (see Pujols). |

Originally posted by soonercntry1 No, I don't know the term. Fiscal stimulus is what it is. Tax cuts, CFC, Tax rebates, tax credits, etc....all can be used as fiscal stimulus.Perhaps, I should have stated that I've never seen a "Government Injection" type of stimulus work. I feel that Government Injection's are flawed by nature and cannot work for long. The other shoe always has to drop. I am not familiar with the govt injection type of stimulus.......But I think I understand your position. wtf!!?? you dont know what that is~~ but you are for CFC .....
