I'm not against Amnesty that much as long as we secure the borders, and go after people hiring illegals for cheap labor because just giving out amnesty won't solve a thing. Reagan did the same thing about 25 years ago and it solved nothing.

And Reagan solved NOTHING when he gave out amnesty. If all we do is give amnesty it'll just delay the problem again instead of solving it.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) announced Wednesday night that he is considering introducing a constitutional amendment that would change existing law to no longer grant citizenship to the children of immigrants born in the United States.

Currently, the 14th Amendment grants citizenship to any child born in the United States.

But with 12 million illegal immigrants living in the U.S., Graham said it may be time to restrict the ability of immigrants to have children who become citizens just because they are born in the country.

“I may introduce a constitutional amendment that changes the rules if you have a child here,” Graham said during an interview with Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren. “Birthright citizenship I think is a mistake ...  We should change our Constitution and say if you come here illegally and you have a child, that child's automatically not a citizen.”

Asked how intent Graham is on introducing the amendment, the South Carolina Republican responded: “I got to.”

“People come here to have babies,” he said. “They come here to drop a child. It's called "drop and leave." To have a child in America, they cross the border, they go to the emergency room, have a child, and that child's automatically an American citizen. That shouldn't be the case. That attracts people here for all the wrong reasons.”

Graham insisted that he wants to be “fair” and “humane” in dealing with the children of immigrants but doesn’t want to see an already significant immigration issue become larger.

“I'm a practical guy, but when you go forward, I don't want 20 million more 20 years from now,” he said. “I want to be fair. I want to be humane. We need immigration policy, but it should be on our terms, not someone else's. I don't know how to fix it all. But I do know what makes people mad, that 12 million people came here, and there seems to be no system to deal with stopping 20 million 20 years from now.”

Reagan said it was the biggest mistake he made as President. If you're trying to mock Reagan or equate him with Graham you're opinion has less relevance than I thought--and that's saying a lot.

I caught Graham on Greta's show this week. He made it clear we simply can't arrest and deport some 12 million illegals that are in our country right now. His message was secure the border, the birthright citzenship you mention above, and having the illegals that are now here apply for citizenship, at the back of the line. Really, if you think about it, that is what needs to be done. Just take off the partisan glasses for a while......

I feel they should have to do a touchback to their home countries first then come in the right way.   No fine, maybe a small processing fee.

With 10 percent unemployment and 27 percent teenage unemployment, this might not be real popular at this time.

The illegals that are here now won't apply for citizenship. Why should they when they can stay in this country without any serious consequences from the feds? Will the government waive the thousands of dollars that it costs for the application fees? The current group of millions of people who immigrated and are/have applied for citizenship through the proper channels are really PO'd about the amnesty option. At least those I know personally are angry about it.

What we need is a combo-stepped approach.

1. Write workable and meaningful alien worker laws. What we have now is a joke. Set out a system whereby companies (including major farming operations) submit requirements. Set up worker visa sign-up stations around Mexico. Those who wish to come to the U.S. should sign-up. This is, in essence, a hiring bureau for American companies who need help and have been approved to handle imported workers. A system like this would allow Mexicans to come to this country and fill a need. Take the need for people to pick crops. Right now we only allow an infinitesimal number and does not come close to filling the need. These are good paying jobs that include housing during crop picking. The wages are from $15 to $25 per hour. (Americans taking unemployment could work these jobs but are not.)

Note: Many of the illegals are not here to become Americans. They come for work and money to send home. Many would prefer to come and work for a bit and return. They don't because of the fear they cannot get back into the U.S.

2. Rework the procedures to immigrate and become a citizen.  Our current procedures are cumbersome and exorbitantly expense. We make it extremely difficult for people to come to this country.

3. Provide employers with the tools to check citizenry status and green card status. Reports are all over the place as to the availability of tools to employers. All employers should be able to inquire into a data base for status.

4. Federal government checking employers for employees having valid papers. Any employer breaking the rules should punished and punishment should be more than a slap on the wrist. Employers need to know that the odds are against them.

5. Enforce border security. Right now we all know it is a joke! All those who wish to enter have to do is wait until the border guards move to another area. 'Course, they can always cross where the border patrol cannot go in a vehicle for environmental reasons.

After we have instituted these things, we can address what to do with the illegals who are left. In no way should someone who has come here illegally get in before those who have waited and waited and paid and paid.

Well said. Too bad that politicians are too dumb to think about something like this. Instead they just want to situation to remain the same for some reason.

Spread the rumor that most of the illegals want to be republicans and Obama will whisk them out in no time.
